HAPPY HANNUKAH!

DATES OF HANNUKAH THIS YEAR:

Sundown, Sunday, December 13, 1998 - Sundown, Monday, December 21, 1998

Why does the date of Hannukah Change?

The dates of Hannukah change every year, because the day Hannukah starts is based on the Jewish calendar -- which pays attention to both the moon and the sun.

(The calendar we use every day is called the Gregorian calendar and it bases today's date only on the position of the sun.)

But no matter what the date says on our Gregorian calendar, Hannukah starts every day on the 25th day of the Jewish month, Kislev.

Hannukah starts at sundown, because the Jewish days begin at sundown (instead of in the morning, like the ones on the Gregorian calendar do.) The Jewish calendar counts a day from sundown to sundown.
