Chapter 2 - The Lipstick

Looking at the body, they saw nothing new. Just the smudge of lipstick on the shoulder of Stephanie's dress.

When they were just about to leave, they saw Jessica and Stephanie's boyfriend walk in.

Jessica, Steven (Stephanie's boyfriend), and Stephanie were all close friends. So it wasn't too unusual to see them walking together.

Mary and Jonathan approached Jessica and Steven. Jonathan saw that Jessica was crying, so he pulled out his handkerchief and gave it to her. Mary didn't pay much attention to it until Jessica handed it back to him.

Mary's face lit up like she had just swallowed a chili pepper and was gasping for air. "Is that the same lipstick you were wearing the night of the murder?" asked Mary.

Jessica sniffled and nodded.

"What kind is it?" Mary asked.

"It's called 'dazzling raspberry.' "

"Thanks."

Then Jessica said, "If you don't mind, I'd like to see Miss Stephanie one last time before I have to go."

Jessica had a police officer with her. She was given permission to see the body of Stephanie Callow before being taken away to prison.

Jonathan said good-bye to Mary-Ann, because she was biting her lip like she always does when she's thinking hard about something.

When Jonathan and Mary got back to the office, Mary exclaimed, "The lipstick, did you see it?"

Jonathan gave her one of those "what on earth are you talking about" looks and said, "Yeah, what about it?"

Mary said, "Look at your handkerchief."

Jonathan pulled it out of his pocket, but before he had time to say a thing, Mary grabbed it and exclaimed, "Her lipstick didn't smudge when Jessica used it!"

Jonathan nodded.

"If this was the lipstick Jessica was wearing, which it was, how did the smudge of lipstick get on Miss Stephanie?"

Jonathan's eyes got so huge they looked like a couple of eggs. Then he said, "It couldn't be, unless it was someone else's."
