TOY BOX

Where's Santa?

WHERE'S SANTA?

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:

INSTRUCTIONS:

Box

Select a cardboard box the size you want your toybox to be. Try to get one with the lid still attached at one side. If you can't find one with the lid attached, fan fold the top shut, then use masking tape to close it tight. Turn the box over and select an adult to cut around the bottom of the box (to make it the lid.) Leave one of the sides attached to the box to form a lid.

Once your box is formed, you can:

Material covers!

Cover it with material:

  • Measure a piece of material to go all the way around the box, over the lid. Add 4 inches to the length and 2 inches to the width. Cut the box to that length and width.
  • Staple the material into the box, being careful to wrap 2 inches around the lid of the box to give it a lip. Tuck the extra 2 inches inside the box and staple it neatly inside the box. You'll have an extra inch on each side, so wrap that around the box and staple it onto the ends of the box. (You may have to clip the corners to make it lay flat.)
  • Cut two pieces of material equal to the size of the ends of the box.
  • Staple those over the wrapped edge. Your box should be completely covered on the outside now.
  • Open the box lid and cut a piece of material to fit on the under side of the lid. Staple that into place under the lid. You now have a beautiful cloth covered toy box!

Paint it. Paint the toybox with a solid color paint first. Something like an artists acrylic paint called "GESSO" works well. Even housepaint will work. (But ask an adult before you dip into the housepaint!)

Let the base coat dry, then paint your picture on your box! Don't forget to paint inside the lid!

Paper covers!

Construction Paper it. Glue or staple colored construction paper to your toy box. In a rainbow of colors if you want (use 3" strips and create a wallpaper of your very own.)

You can even paint or draw on it! To make neat edges, tape two pieces of construction paper together, then turn them inside out (put the tape on the inside, next to the box) and form a corner. Staple your construction paper into place
