The Girl Who Owned a City

by O. T. Nelson

reviewed by a 5th grade teacher, from US

In this story, a virus wipes out all the people in the world over the age of 13, leaving only children to fend for themselves. The survivors, children, deal first with finding food, next with forging new bonds of friendships. The main characters, Lisa and her brother, also need to plan for ways to protect themselves against the gangs that choose to steal what Lisa and her friends have acquired, rather than work for their own. It takes courage and a lot of hard work, but Lisa, the girl who owned the city, and her friends make it! It is a book filled with suspense, friendship and cunning. The kids kept begging me to read "just one more chapter!"
